Canada: Domestic Consumption on the Rise

Many Canadians have embraced buying domestic products in recent months, as domestic beer accounted for nearly nine out of every ten dollars of beer sold nationally (88%) during the 2023/2024 fiscal year.

The alcohol percentage of regular beer ranges between 4% and 5.5%, with most reaching the typical 5% alcohol level.

Alcohol authorities and retailers sold 660 million liters of Canadian regular beer in 2023/2024, down 3.4% from the previous year and 9.9% from the record 740 million liters sold in 2017/2018.

However, traditional domestic breweries increased their sales for the eighth consecutive year.

In March 2024, Canadians were paying 4.7% more year-over-year for beer at bars and restaurants, while store-bought beer prices increased 2.2%.

Regarding light beer, Canadian breweries dominate, with a domestic sales market share exceeding 98.6% in 2023/2024.

Sales of domestic strong beer, with an alcohol content of 5.5% or higher, increased 11% year-over-year.
