France: Beer Consumption Surpasses Wine in France

Beer consumption in France has exceeded wine consumption for the first time in modern history, according to data published by Brasseurs de France and the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV).

The figures show that French consumers drank 22.1 million hectolitres of beer last year, compared with 22.0 million hectolitres of wine. The development reflects changing consumer preferences and a gradual shift in drinking habits, particularly among younger consumers.

At the same time, wine consumption continues to decline both in France and globally. According to the OIV, worldwide wine consumption fell again in 2025, driven by economic pressures, changing consumer behavior, and ongoing challenges affecting the wine sector.

Despite the milestone, France remains one of the world’s largest wine markets and a key producer within the global wine industry.
