By joining the SBTi community of more than 11,000 companies worldwide, BarthHaas commits to defining science-based targets in line with the latest climate research. In accordance with SBTi requirements, the Group will ensure that Scope 1 and Scope 2 targets cover at least 95% of emissions under operational control and will also establish a Scope 3 target to address value-chain emissions, which are particularly significant in agricultural and processing industries.
“This reflects our long-standing commitment to sustainable innovation and our responsibility to reduce emissions in line with the latest climate science,” said Laxmi Pandit, Sustainability Manager at John I. Haas.
The Group’s Global Sustainability team is currently compiling greenhouse gas inventories and assessing decarbonization requirements across all operations. A draft emissions reduction roadmap covering a 5–10 year timeframe from the defined base year is planned for submission to the SBTi for validation later in 2026. “We see global, group-wide collaboration as an opportunity to advance our sustainability efforts through shared knowledge and complementary resources,” said Christian Kammerer, Global Sustainability Coordinator for the BarthHaas Group.
Decarbonization measures will vary by site, reflecting local conditions and opportunities. Initiatives under consideration include the use of production waste as biological fuel, expansion of photovoltaic systems, consolidation of production facilities to leverage efficiencies, and recovery of process gases. Intensified cooperation with suppliers is also planned to support alignment with SBTi targets across the value chain.
“Horticultural productivity both impacts and is impacted by climate change, making mitigation and adaptation essential to ensuring a reliable supply of high-quality hops,” said George Webster, Sustainability Manager at Hop Products Australia. “Our SBTi commitment will help define decarbonization strategies that are appropriate for our sector, with significant potential in renewable energy use.”
Progress against targets will be reported annually through the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), in line with SBTi requirements for transparent disclosure. “By aligning with the SBTi, the BarthHaas Group intends to set an ambitious emissions reduction target and encourages others in the industry to make a similar commitment,” added Tamanda Whittle, Quality and Sustainability Liaison Coordinator at BarthHaas UK.
The Science Based Targets initiative is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute and WWF, supporting companies worldwide in setting emissions reduction targets consistent with climate science.
