Italy: Marchesi Alfieri Releases Its First White Wine in 25 Years

Marchesi Alfieri has released Derthona Colli Tortonesi DOC Timorasso 2023, marking the estate’s return to white winemaking after more than 25 years and expanding its portfolio beyond the red wines of Piedmont.

The new wine represents a strategic and technical development for the historic estate, which has been producing wine since 1696. According to winemaker Mario Olivero, who has led winemaking at Marchesi Alfieri since 1999, the decision to work with Timorasso reflects the winery’s focus on structure, freshness and ageing potential. Once widely cultivated in Piedmont, Timorasso nearly disappeared in the 20th century before being rediscovered in the 1980s.

The grapes for Derthona come from six hectares of vineyards in Monleale, within the Colli Tortonesi appellation. The east-facing site lies at around 400 metres above sea level and was selected for its climatic conditions and landscape, which combines vineyards and woodland. The estate describes the location as consistent with its long-term approach to sustainable land management.

Vinification follows a restrained approach: whole clusters are gently pressed, fermentation takes place in stainless steel at controlled temperatures, and the wine is aged on fine lees to develop texture and complexity. The resulting style is characterised by fresh fruit notes, mineral nuances and a balanced, saline palate.

The 2023 vintage, the first release of Derthona by Marchesi Alfieri, will be available from January 2026. The winery reports that the wine already shows balance and structure, with potential for further development over time. It is positioned as a food-oriented wine and will be sold at the estate and through the hospitality channel.

The label references the marl soils of the Tortona area and uses the historic name “Derthona” to underline the wine’s geographical and cultural origins.
