Uruguay: Wine strengthens presence in Asia at ProWine Tokyo 2026

Uruguay Wine participated in ProWine Tokyo 2026, further strengthening the country’s presence in the Asian market and highlighting the growing international recognition of Uruguayan wines.

The national delegation included ten wineries showcasing the diversity and quality of Uruguay’s wine sector, with a particular focus on the country’s flagship grape variety, Tannat, alongside other internationally recognised varietals. Participating wineries included Bouza, Bracco Bosca, Cerro del Toro, Garzón, Juanicó/Familia Deicas, Los Nadies, Mederos, Montes Toscanini, Pisano and Viña Progreso.

During the three-day event, the Uruguay Wine stand welcomed importers, distributors, sommeliers, trade media and industry professionals, as well as representatives from the Uruguayan Embassy in Japan. The fair provided an important platform for commercial exchange and market positioning in Japan.

According to Uruguay Wine, participation in ProWine Tokyo confirmed the strong potential of the Japanese market, which is characterised by sophisticated consumer preferences and growing interest in premium wines with identity and origin. As a result of these promotional efforts, Uruguay was recently included in the J.S.A. Sommelier Guide of the Sommelier Association of Japan.

As part of the programme, a special event celebrating World Tannat Day was also held at the Uruguayan Embassy in Japan, bringing together local market representatives, diplomatic officials and winery representatives to further strengthen business relationships and promote Uruguayan wine culture.

The participation forms part of INAVI’s strategy to diversify export markets and expand opportunities in Asia, where demand for high-quality wines continues to grow.
