Between 2021 and 2022, domestic beer volume rose by around 4%, fueled by the return of large-scale events like concerts and festivals, the rebound of tourism, and a surge in craft breweries. This upward trend persisted into 2023, as Euromonitor reported that consumer spending on beer grew by 7.1%, despite ongoing inflationary pressures.
Per capita consumption remains strong. Based on Colombia’s 2022 population of 52 million, average annual beer consumption stands at approximately 47 liters per person.
Two key factors have driven this growth. First, major brewers such as Bavaria-AB InBev and Central Cervecera expanded their category strategies, including the rollout of refrigeration networks in neighborhood stores, which brought cold beer to more than 400,000 retail points.
Second, the craft beer sector has seen rapid expansion. With over 400 microbreweries—mainly in Bogotá, Medellín, and Cali—offering styles from Colombian-hopped IPAs to passion fruit sours, craft beer now plays a significant role in the industry’s evolution. Although it accounts for just 1% of total volume, it is growing at double-digit rates annually and has sparked a rise in beer tourism through events like the Bogotá Beer Festival and the Medellín Beer Fair.
