Peru: Increase in beer consumption

According to data from the market research agency LR&I, in the first six months of the year the sale of beer has shown a greater increase in supermarkets nationwide.

Beer consumption has been recovering in the supermarket channel at the national level after the elimination of restrictions on social gatherings in homes and thus returning to the purchase of beer during the soccer matches of the Peruvian team for the Qualifiers towards the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Thus, between January and April of this year, it has achieved two-digit growth in beer sales in volume (33%) and in value (28%), mainly driven by the good performance of packages with higher content such as boxes x 12 large bottles. Additionally, the average price per liter of this presentation is lower compared to other categories and other formats. Currently, the average price per liter is 2.5 euros. In this way, the beer category recovers after a sharp drop in the first quarter of 2020 due to the pandemic.

According to the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), the prices of alcoholic beverages at the national level have risen 2.18% in the last year, with beer being one of those that has shown the greatest increase.
