Peruvian rum is the third most exported alcoholic beverage

According to data from the National Society of Industries (SNI), between January and May 2024, production in the alcoholic beverage sector grew by 0.8%. Among them, two stand out: Distillation, rectification and mixing of beverages (+8.2%); as well as the production of malted and malt beverages (+1.6%).

Among the spirits, one of the products that has gained prominence, mainly abroad, is rum, which has become the third most exported alcoholic beverage in Peru; after pisco and beer. It is followed by wine and vodka.

Between January and June 2024, the main destinations for national rum were Colombia (73%), the Netherlands (17.3%), Ecuador (3.1%), the United States (2.2%) and Germany (1.2%).

According to the SNI Spirits Committee, rum sales in Peru are currently approximately 1.5 million nine-liter cases, of which more than 70% correspond to national production. While 30% is imported from the following countries: Nicaragua (41.2%), Dominican Republic (17.2%) and Colombia (12.3%).

Annual per capita consumption of rum in Peru is 400 ml, while in some Caribbean countries it exceeds 5 liters per person. In Colombia, it reaches 600 ml and in Chile almost 1000 ml, states the SNI in its report.
